Project Summary / Description:

The Surplus Food Waste Methane Mitigation Initiative prevents methane emissions by diverting surplus food from disposal and redistributing it across the food supply chain. Through the Surplus digital platform, farms, processors, retailers, and HORECA businesses identify excess inventory before spoilage and redistribute it to consumers and secondary markets. By preventing edible food from entering landfills where anaerobic decomposition produces methane, the initiative directly reduces methane emissions while recovering economic value for businesses and improving affordable food access. Operating with more than 1 million users and 10,000 merchants, the initiative demonstrates scalable data driven methane mitigation through circular food systems in emerging markets.

Surplus Indonesia’s Food Waste Methane Mitigation Initiative empowers underrepresented groups in the climate movement by creating economic opportunities and improving access to affordable food through circular food systems. Many of the merchants participating in the Surplus ecosystem are small and medium sized food businesses, market vendors, and local producers who often operate with limited resources and lack access to digital markets. By enabling these businesses to recover value from surplus inventory rather than discarding it, the initiative strengthens livelihoods while reducing food waste and methane emissions.

The platform also improves food access for low and middle income communities by making surplus food available at significantly reduced prices. This allows households facing economic vulnerability to access nutritious food that would otherwise be lost in the supply chain.

Within the organization Surplus Indonesia actively engages young professionals and emerging leaders in climate and sustainability fields. The initiative also collaborates with women led small businesses and community partners across the food system, helping ensure that the transition toward circular and low waste food systems creates inclusive economic opportunities while delivering measurable climate impact.
