Project Summary / Description:

The "Ecumenical Decade of Climate Justice Action” (2025-2034) was launched in June 2025. This project equips faith actors with know-how, resources, toolkits, trainings and campaigning materials to contribute tangibly to reduction of CO2 emissions. It enables effective reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increase of carbon uptake by influencing policies and operational choices and by building capacity for climate-responsible banking and climate litigation, anchored in expertise and good practices for scalable GHG emissions reduction.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The WCC has multiple dedicated, expert-led programs—environmental, theological, educational, human rights, gender justice, Indigenous partnerships, and global regional structures—that will work together to implement the project at scale. First, it elevates frontline and climate-vulnerable communities as co-designers, not just beneficiaries. The Decade intentionally centers Indigenous Peoples, small island nations, rural communities, and low-income congregations by involving them in agenda-setting, leadership roles, theological framing, and resource development. This ensures decision-making authority rests with those most affected by climate harm. Additionally, women leaders—especially from the Global South—play core roles in WCC’s climate justice theology, regional coordination, pastoral training, and public witness. The Decade expands these opportunities through leadership programs, regional hubs, and church-based organizing spaces where women can shape priorities and strategies. Finally, the initiative provides explicit pathways for young people to lead climate organizing within churches: youth climate schools, intergenerational learning exchanges, digital training platforms, and roles in global events such as pilgrimages and justice campaigns.
