Project Summary / Description:
We recondition second-life EV batteries and integrate them into modular hybrid energy nodes that provide stable, high-uptime power for electric motorcycle swap stations in weak-grid environments. This initiative aims to preserve the emissions benefits of clean mobility by preventing downtime-related reversion to petrol motorcycles and extending the useful life of EV batteries.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project directly strengthens climate participation among groups that are often excluded from clean-energy transitions: youth, informal workers, and communities affected by unreliable grid infrastructure. More than 70 percent of electric motorcycle riders in East Africa are young people working in the gig economy, many earning below the national median income. Grid outages reduce their daily earnings by 15–30 percent and push them back to petrol motorcycles, which undermines both livelihoods and climate impact. By stabilizing energy for swap stations, our project protects income for these workers while preserving avoided emissions. Our leadership team itself is youth-led, with founders and technical staff all under 30. This representation matters because most climate-tech hardware solutions in the region are developed without youth leadership, even though young people make up the majority of EV riders and technicians. Our team includes engineers and battery specialists from public universities who come from the same communities we serve, ensuring that design decisions reflect real constraints in low-resource settings. As we expand, we will train and employ local technicians from underserved neighborhoods to operate and maintain hybrid nodes. This creates technical jobs within communities that are typically left out of the clean-energy workforce.
