Project Summary / Description:
ExZyme Biodiesel is one of our projects to discover and engineer extremophile lipase (thermos-acido-lipase) to directly reduce GHG emissions by converting high-waste, high-emission palm-oil residues (PFAD and POME) into low-carbon biodiesel, displacing fossil fuels and cutting methane and CO₂ emissions from waste decomposition.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our team actively includes women researchers, early-career scientists, and both undergraduate and graduate students who are gaining their first exposure to advanced enzyme and bioprocess technologies. By grounding our work within Indonesia’s public research ecosystem, we provide hands-on training and mentorship to young scientists who would otherwise have limited access to deep-tech laboratories. ExZyme Biodiesel is designed to directly empower rural communities, particularly smallholders and operators of small and medium-scale palm-oil mills. These groups often lack access to cleaner processing technologies and face economic and environmental burdens from PFAD and POME waste. By offering a low-energy, enzyme-based bioconversion solution, we aim to reduce pollution in rural areas while strengthening local capacity to engage in higher-value, climate-positive processes. Through technology access, capacity building, and inclusive research involvement, our initiative supports groups that are typically underrepresented in both biotechnology and climate mitigation efforts.
