Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ECOWRAP empowers underrepresented groups in the climate movement by embedding inclusion, dignity, and income security into the core of its waste management model, while also ensuring representation within the organization. Women’s empowerment is central to ECOWRAP’s impact. The company runs a women-led waste upcycling initiative where rural women are trained to convert waste into value-added products. These women earn based on their production (not sales outcomes), enabling stable, flexible incomes while working from home. Women also hold leadership roles within the organization, including project leadership positions. Informal waste workers (ragpickers)—often from economically and socially marginalized communities—are transitioned into formal employment with permanent payrolls, fair wages, accommodation support, and medical insurance. This shift improves safety, income stability, and social dignity while recognizing their critical role in climate mitigation. ECOWRAP also works extensively in small towns and rural areas, which are often excluded from climate innovation despite being highly vulnerable to environmental degradation. By partnering with gram panchayats and local bodies, the project builds local capacity and ownership of climate solutions. Within the organization, a significant portion of staff come from rural backgrounds, and diversity is reflected across operations, leadership, and field teams.
