Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Urbanbetter is intentionally designed to empower groups traditionally underrepresented in climate-health policy: youth, women, and urban populations in the Global South. Our model works by transforming those most affected by systemic neglect into Cityzens. We achieve this by providing access to the tools, skills and coalitions to drive change using citizen science. This approach ensures that climate solutions are tailored and equitable, based on the lived experiences of largely underrepresented urban residents. Representation is core to our structure: 1) Youth: The Cityzens movement is youth-led, ensuring all project outputs, from data collection to advocacy campaigns, reflect young people’s priorities. 2) Women: Our founding team and current leadership are African women, ensuring the strategic direction is grounded in the continent’s context and challenges. 3) Climate-Vulnerable Communities: By focusing exclusively on high-growth, low-income urban areas in Africa, we ensure our resources directly benefit the populations experiencing the fastest rate of change and the fewest resources to adapt. The Cityzens are, by design, members of these vulnerable communities.
