How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project is intentionally designed to empower groups that are historically underrepresented in the climate movement, including women, youth, and rural climate-vulnerable communities. Rural households in Kenya—particularly women-led families—bear the greatest burden of energy poverty, relying on kerosene and diesel that harm health, limit economic participation, and increase vulnerability to climate impacts. By replacing these fuels with community-managed solar mini-grids, we reduce daily hardships, expand livelihood opportunities, and enable safer, cleaner living conditions. Women play a central role in our governance model. They are represented in mini-grid committees, involved in tariff-setting decisions, and prioritized for training in productive-use activities such as refrigeration, agro-processing, and small-scale manufacturing. Our youth program trains young technicians—including many who were previously unemployed—to operate and maintain the systems, building long-term technical capacity and local leadership within the climate sector. Within our organization, women and youth hold key leadership positions, including programs coordination, community mobilization, M&E, and technical support. This ensures that decision-making reflects the lived realities of the communities we serve. By combining clean energy access with skills development, economic empowerment, and local governance, our project brings underrepresented groups into the center of climate action—as leaders, beneficiaries, and long-term stewards of a low-carbon future.
