Project Summary / Description:

The Community-Based Clean-Energy Dehydration and Circular Biofuel Innovation for Climate-Smart Food Systems initiative deploys hybrid solar dryers and high-efficiency biomass gasifiers to reduce post-harvest losses and the greenhouse gas emissions they generate. Operating through community dehydration hubs, we enable farmers to safely preserve climate-resilient crops year-round using clean solar heat and circular biofuels derived from cassava peels and other agricultural waste. This zero-waste system replaces firewood and diesel drying, prevents methane emissions from food spoilage, and increases farmer income. Through Taliana Foods, nutrient value addition transforms dried crops into affordable, nutritious products, strengthening community well-being and accelerating the adoption of climate-smart food systems across Kenya, Uganda, and Sierra Leone.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Our project empowers groups underrepresented in climate action—particularly women, youth, rural smallholder farmers, and people with disabilities—by expanding access to clean-energy food processing. Across our hubs, 72% of active users are women and 38% are youth, reflecting the demographics most affected by post-harvest losses. These groups typically lose 30–40% of their harvests, and over 60% rely on firewood, exposing them to both economic and environmental risk.

By providing modern dehydration services, farmers reduce losses by up to 80%, earn 20–50% higher income for safely dried crops, and gain reliable access to year-round markets. Our circular-biofuel systems replace firewood in hub operations, reducing energy-related labour for women—who account for up to 90% of fuel collection in some regions.

Beyond Kenya, our replication partnerships in East and West Africa intentionally include organizations serving vulnerable and neurodiverse populations, ensuring that climate technologies create structured, supportive livelihood opportunities for groups often excluded from conventional economic activity.

In our own organization, inclusion is built into leadership: women lead key departments, including community engagement and nutrition, and our Founder is a person with a disability, ensuring representation in strategy and innovation. Additionally, over 60% of our technical staff come from rural counties, expanding local climate capacity.
