Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

ASDF’s project is intentionally designed to empower climate-vulnerable and historically underrepresented groups, particularly rural women, youth, and marginalized dryland communities in Kenya’s ASAL regions. Women, who shoulder most household water collection and manage over 40% of smallholder farms, are at the center of our model. By constructing sand dams and installing solar-powered water systems close to homesteads, we drastically reduce the time women spend fetching water, enabling them to lead income-generating activities, improve food production, and participate meaningfully in community decision-making.
Youth are engaged through training in climate-smart agriculture, tree nursery management, soil conservation, and maintenance of solar pumping systems, equipping them with green skills and livelihood opportunities that reduce rural unemployment. Our Self-Help Group (SHG) approach ensures that the poorest and most marginalized households are included in planning, implementation, and governance of water and land restoration projects.
Within ASDF, these groups are also well represented. Women lead or co-lead many SHGs, and community committees include youth and vulnerable households by design. At the organizational level, ASDF employs staff from the same regions we serve, ensuring cultural relevance, lived experience, and gender-balanced engagement across programs.
