Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

This project empowers climate‑vulnerable and historically underrepresented communities by strengthening long-standing, community-led efforts to protect the Santiago River. It builds on decades of grassroots action led mainly by local women affected by pollution-related health impacts and by youth advocating for healthier environments.

Juanacatlán faces severe vulnerability, marked by low environmental performance, rapid population growth, and increasing pressure on shared ecological commons. Despite these conditions, no comparable nature-based climate restoration initiative currently operates in the area.

The project shifts community members from passive beneficiaries to active co-designers, monitors, and long-term stewards of climate infrastructure through Living Laboratories, participatory monitoring, and school-based engagement. Women and youth lead data collection, restoration work, and local governance, ensuring that community knowledge guides decision-making.

Individually, the project expands access to safer green spaces, cooling microclimates, and cleaner air and soils. Collectively, it strengthens social cohesion, environmental health, and climate resilience. By addressing environmental injustice at the intersection of health, pollution, and inequality, the initiative delivers concrete benefits to frontline communities already driving climate action, while expanding their access to resources, technical capacity, and long-term impact.
