WATTS ON: Lighting Students’ Lives is a clean energy and education initiative that provides solar lamps to students living off-grid, replacing fossil-fuel lighting and enabling safe, reliable study after dark. Delivered through schools in partnership with ChildFund International, the program integrates structured monitoring of educational performance and qualitative household impacts.
Each solar lamp eliminates kerosene use for lighting, avoiding approximately 92 kg of CO₂ per year while improving student learning, safety, and wellbeing. The initiative operates across multiple countries and is designed to scale through standardized delivery, trusted local partnerships, and sustainable financing mechanisms, including carbon credit certification.

WATTS ON: Lighting Students’ Lives is designed to serve and empower communities that are both climate-vulnerable and underrepresented in the climate movement, including rural youth, women and girls, and low-income communities living without access to electricity.
The initiative centers students as primary beneficiaries, recognizing education as a critical pathway to long-term climate resilience and opportunity. Access to solar lighting enables students—particularly girls—to study safely after dark, improving educational outcomes while reducing exposure to risks associated with kerosene use and unlit environments.
Women and caregivers benefit from safer household lighting, reduced indoor air pollution, and increased ability to complete evening tasks. Teachers—many of whom live without reliable electricity themselves—are empowered through improved working conditions and a central role in monitoring and feedback.
Organizationally, Econic Earth works in partnership with ChildFund International and local organizations that are deeply rooted in the communities they serve. Program implementation relies on local educators, community coordinators, and field teams who reflect the populations served and provide critical leadership, insight, and accountability.
