GreenAC is a liquid desiccant–based air-conditioning initiative that reduces cooling-related emissions by replacing electricity- and refrigerant-intensive systems with thermally driven cooling powered by renewable and waste heat. It delivers up to 80% electricity savings, eliminates synthetic refrigerants, and provides scalable, low-carbon cooling for hot and humid regions.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

GreenAC empowers climate-vulnerable and underrepresented groups by addressing heat stress and post-harvest losses that disproportionately affect smallholder farmers, and rural communities. Beyond comfort cooling, the same liquid desiccant technology is being applied to farm-level onion storage, where maintaining temperatures of 25–31°C and relative humidity of 55–65% is critical. Using solar thermal energy, the system enables storage of 12.5 tons of onions for 5–6 months during the monsoon season at near-zero operating cost, reducing post-harvest losses from ~30% to ~5%. This directly increases incomes and resilience for small and marginal farmers, many of whom are women and members of climate-vulnerable communities.
The same approach is highly relevant for yam storage in West African countries, where losses due to heat and humidity are substantial and access to reliable electricity is limited. By enabling low-cost, non-refrigerated climate control using renewable heat, the technology can support food security and livelihoods for millions of smallholder farmers across the region.
The project has received approval from the Government of India to install the first unit at the National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD), supporting evidence-based policy inclusion.
