Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Dunia Bora centers empowerment of underrepresented groups as a core part of its climate strategy. Our primary beneficiaries are women farmers in arid and semi-arid lands of Laikipia County, who often face limited economic opportunities, land tenure challenges, and exclusion from climate decision-making. By training and engaging these women in Opuntia cultivation, biomass management, and product development, we provide income, skills, and leadership opportunities while ensuring long-term stewardship of carbon sinks. Youth participation is integrated through internships, technical training, and field research, building climate capacity in the next generation of innovators and fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer. Within our organization, underrepresented groups are actively represented in leadership and operational roles. The leadership team includes women in key positions—Careen as Head of Research and Development leads technical innovation and product design, while community engagement programs involve both women and youth in decision-making and implementation. This dual approach ensures that climate action is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable: the communities most affected by climate vulnerability are directly empowered to manage carbon sinks, while our organizational structure models leadership opportunities for women and youth. By linking empowerment with measurable carbon sequestration, Dunia Bora demonstrates that inclusive climate solutions can drive both social and environmental impact.
Mission Statement:
To restore arid and semi-arid lands by transforming Opuntia cactus into a community-managed carbon sink that removes atmospheric carbon, strengthens livelihoods, and enables climate resilience where conventional solutions fail.
