Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Our project empowers underrepresented communities by improving core infrastructure that directly affects health, livelihoods, and resilience.

First, improved wastewater treatment delivers downstream health benefits for communities living in informal and unorganized settlements, who are disproportionately exposed to polluted waterways. By stabilizing treatment processes and reducing pollution, our approach lowers exposure to pathogens and contaminants, particularly critical during heat waves and flooding events, when health risks are highest.

Second, our solution increases bicarbonate levels in receiving waters, helping counter coastal acidification near urban centers. Healthier coastal chemistry supports the recovery of fisheries and marine biodiversity, directly benefiting small-scale fishing communities whose livelihoods depend on productive coasts.

Third, by enabling utilities to generate carbon revenue, our project creates new financial pathways for municipalities. These revenues can be reinvested into expanding and upgrading wastewater infrastructure, helping extend sanitation services to underserved localities.

In terms of representation, our team is currently small, but community engagement is central to our approach. We work closely with NGOs, municipal partners, and local stakeholders, and we will actively consult downstream and coastal communities throughout project design and deployment. Building trust and community buy-in is essential to ensuring our solution delivers equitable and lasting impact.
