Project Summary / Description:
AquaBio Shade Solutions converts agricultural waste into durable, carbon‑storing bioplastic shade balls that reduce water evaporation, replace fossil‑based plastics, and support community‑based circular‑economy manufacturing. The initiative advances measurable GHG reductions through carbon retention, waste diversion, and improved water‑energy efficiency.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
AquaBio Shade Solutions is a youth‑led initiative rooted in rural and peri‑urban communities that are often excluded from climate‑innovation opportunities. Our project empowers underrepresented groups by creating accessible pathways into green manufacturing, environmental stewardship, and circular‑economy entrepreneurship. Youth play central leadership roles in research, prototyping, and community engagement. We intentionally recruit and train individuals from underserved communities, including rural households affected by water scarcity and agricultural waste challenges. By establishing community manufacturing hubs, we create local employment, build technical skills, and strengthen climate resilience at the grassroots level. Our educational outreach promotes climate literacy, waste‑management awareness, and sustainable livelihoods. Through participatory design, we ensure that community voices shape deployment strategies and benefit directly from the project’s success. Underrepresented groups are not only beneficiaries — they are co‑creators of the solution.
Mission Statement:
AquaBio Shade Solutions develops community‑powered, carbon‑storing bioplastic technologies that protect water resources, reduce emissions, and advance circular‑economy innovation across Africa.
