Project Summary / Description:

This initiative restores degraded forests in Buhoma–Bwindi, Nkuringo, and Rubuguri while actively engaging Indigenous Batwa and frontline communities. Through tree planting, community stewardship, and integration of traditional knowledge, it strengthens ecosystem resilience, sequesters carbon, and empowers local communities to sustainably manage their landscapes.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

ACP’s forest restoration initiative actively empowers Indigenous Batwa communities, one of Uganda’s most marginalized groups, who have historically been excluded from conservation decision-making. Through participatory planning, tree planting, and stewardship programs, Batwa community members are directly involved in all stages of forest restoration, ensuring their knowledge, culture, and priorities are respected and integrated.

The initiative also prioritizes youth and women within Batwa and frontline villages by providing training in sustainable livelihoods, conservation techniques, and monitoring, enabling them to take leadership roles in local environmental stewardship. These programs foster both economic empowerment and climate resilience, allowing underrepresented groups to benefit directly from conservation outcomes.

Within ACP, women and Indigenous representatives are actively engaged across leadership and operational roles. For example, our Project Coordinator and Field Officer are women, and our community programs ensure Batwa voices are included in project planning and implementation. This internal representation strengthens decision-making, accountability, and inclusivity, and reflects ACP’s commitment to equitable climate action.

By combining community-led restoration, capacity building, and inclusive governance, ACP ensures that underrepresented groups are not just beneficiaries, but active leaders in climate solutions, amplifying their voices and impact in the broader environmental movement.
