Project Summary / Description:
EcoBrique is an innovative project that transforms plastic waste collected from urban neighborhoods in Conakry into durable eco-friendly bricks. Each brick partially replaces traditional concrete, reducing the carbon footprint of construction. The project combines community awareness with local employment by training youth in plastic collection, sorting, and processing. Since its pilot launch, EcoBrick has recycled over 5 tons of plastic and built eco-friendly infrastructure in two local schools. The project aims to scale across the Conakry region, creating a replicable model for other West African cities. The environmental impact is twofold: reducing plastic pollution in streets and decreasing CO₂ emissions through the use of sustainable construction materials.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
EcoBrique actively empowers underrepresented groups, particularly youth and women, who are often excluded from formal employment and climate action initiatives in Guinea. The project prioritizes training, employment, and leadership opportunities for these groups in all stages of its operations, from plastic collection and sorting to brick production and community outreach. At the pilot stage, EcoBrique aims to train and employ 20–30 local youth, ensuring at least 50% female participation. This approach not only provides economic empowerment but also builds technical skills in sustainable production and climate mitigation strategies. By integrating underrepresented community members into decision-making processes, the project fosters local ownership and strengthens social cohesion. Within the organization, leadership roles reflect this commitment: women and youth are included in operational management, outreach coordination, and technical advisory positions. Their representation ensures that project design and implementation consider diverse perspectives, address community needs effectively, and challenge traditional power dynamics. Through capacity building, equitable employment, and inclusive governance, EcoBrique demonstrates that climate solutions can be both environmentally impactful and socially just, creating replicable models that empower vulnerable and underrepresented populations while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Mission Statement:
EcoBrique’s mission is to reduce plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by transforming non-recyclable plastic waste into durable, low-carbon construction materials, while empowering youth, women, and climate-vulnerable communities through green jobs, skills development, and community-led climate action.
