Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
SubjectToClimate expands access to climate education for communities that have been historically excluded from high-quality instructional materials and environmental decision-making. Because students of color, multilingual learners, and low-income communities disproportionately lack standards-aligned, grade-appropriate resources, we make all of our materials and all professional learning free and accessible worldwide. Our library includes lessons in Chinese, French, and Spanish and resources in over 90 languages, justice-centered units, and resources addressing racial, economic, Indigenous, gender, and intergenerational dimensions of climate change. These materials uplift community stories and ensure students see their lived experiences reflected in climate learning. Our programs also prioritize reaching educators in rural and climate-vulnerable regions, where access to professional development and climate resources is often sparse. Underrepresented groups are also represented meaningfully within our organization. Many of our educators, staff, and partners bring lived experience from frontline and historically marginalized communities, shaping our curriculum, pedagogy, and program design. We also strive to reach classrooms beyond the sciences. While 66% of our teacher training participants teach natural sciences, 32% teach humanities, 28% the arts, 10% health or physical education, and 9% world languages. (Since educators often teach across multiple disciplines, these percentages may surpass 100%.)
