Project Summary / Description:
Sunrise Spectrum is an active deployment initiative delivering clean cookstoves and decentralized solar energy systems in Northern Ghana. The initiative replaces traditional biomass cooking and fossil-based energy use with low-emissions alternatives, reducing household greenhouse gas emissions while improving energy access, health outcomes, and community resilience. The model is designed for scalable replication across underserved regions.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Sunrise Spectrum is explicitly designed to serve and empower climate-vulnerable and underrepresented groups, particularly rural households and women in low-income communities. Clean-cooking interventions directly reduce exposure to household air pollution, which disproportionately affects women and children, while decentralized energy access supports income-generating activities often led by women and youth. Community engagement is central to project design and implementation. Local partners and community leaders play an active role in decision-making, deployment planning, and feedback processes. This ensures that solutions are adapted to local priorities and usage patterns rather than imposed externally. Within the organization and its partnerships, Sunrise Spectrum prioritizes collaboration with locally rooted organizations and practitioners, ensuring that implementation capacity and knowledge remain embedded in the communities served. By coupling infrastructure delivery with participatory governance and local economic opportunity, the project advances climate solutions that are not only low-carbon, but also socially inclusive and equitable.
