Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The climate movement often ignores the most vulnerable communities. In fact, the informal economy often accounts for 50 to 80% of urban employment in the Global South yet is disregarded by policymakers and left out of national climate plans. Only 16 countries mention informal settlements in their national climate plans (NDCs).  

 

Our project focuses on providing substantial, tangible, affordable cooling to those living in informal settlements in heat-stressed regions. Within informal settlement communities, extreme heat impacts those who work, study, and reside indoors during the day without cooling solutions – namely, women, children, and the elderly. Improved thermal comfort can support improved productivity, health and wellbeing.  

 

We’ve also carefully selected our grassroots organization partner for this project: the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). In this project, SEWA will serve as our local implementation partner in India, responsible for leading community engagement and coordination during the pilot with participating households. Beyond this pilot, SEWA will be a critical partner to deploy PDRC solutions at scale.   

 

Third Derivative’s climate technology accelerator works with over 286 startups globally, of which 27% have at least one female founder and almost half have at least one founder who is a person of color.
