Project Summary / Description:
The initiative transforms agricultural date seed waste into a low-carbon beverage alternative, reducing organic waste disposal and associated methane emissions while partially substituting high-emission conventional coffee. By applying circular economy principles, the project creates climate impact through waste reduction, efficient resource use, and scalable low-carbon consumption models.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Date Seed Circular Coffee Initiative actively engages and empowers groups traditionally underrepresented in the climate movement. In our project, local smallholder farmers, many of whom are women and youth, play a central role in sourcing date seed waste. By providing training, fair compensation, and opportunities for skill development in sustainable processing and business operations, we enable these communities to participate meaningfully in climate solutions while improving livelihoods. Within our team, women hold key leadership positions, including community engagement and project coordination roles, ensuring diverse perspectives guide decision-making. Youth team members contribute to innovative solutions for processing efficiency and sustainable marketing, demonstrating how young people can lead impactful climate initiatives. Through workshops, participatory decision-making, and inclusive operational practices, the initiative ensures that benefits and responsibilities are shared equitably, while underrepresented groups gain visibility and agency in climate action. By centering these communities, the project not only addresses environmental challenges but also fosters social inclusion, empowerment, and capacity-building, creating a model for equitable participation in the circular economy and climate solutions.
