ClearBag Lagos is a community-led environmental infrastructure initiative that transforms cultural participation into verified climate value at city scale.

Building on years of Riteonthebeach’s work in Lagos, the initiative introduces a visible waste system using clear plastic bags to encourage separation at source. This simple intervention is paired with deep community engagement through schools, markets, housing estates, and volunteer networks, ensuring participation is inclusive and culturally grounded.

Beyond the physical intervention, ClearBag Lagos operates a verification and data framework that captures how collective behavior translates into measurable environmental outcomes. Hub-level sorting, standardized audits, and conservative reporting protocols generate an auditable environmental performance ledger that governments, auditors, and financiers can trust.

The initiative directly contributes to climate mitigation by reducing landfill-bound plastics, limiting open burning, and increasing the recovery of materials that displace virgin production. At the same time, it functions as an enabling system—allowing cities to align community action with compliance requirements, climate finance, and circular economy investment.

ClearBag Lagos demonstrates how culture, when intentionally designed and verified, can become durable climate infrastructure.

ClearBag Lagos is rooted in climate-vulnerable urban communities that are underrepresented in formal climate decision-making, particularly low-income households and women who manage domestic waste. These groups experience the direct impacts of plastic pollution—blocked drainage, flooding, health risks—yet are rarely recognized as contributors to climate solutions.

The project empowers women by designing participation around existing household roles rather than imposing new burdens. Clear plastic bags enable women to separate waste without additional tools, training, or digital access. In pilot communities, women have acted as household coordinators, school liaisons, and neighborhood advocates, helping normalize separation at source through peer influence rather than enforcement.

ClearBag Lagos also engages youth from local schools and tertiary institutions as volunteers, supporting outreach, registration, and monitoring. These roles provide practical environmental leadership experience and position young people as trusted intermediaries between households, communities, and institutions.

Climate-vulnerable communities are represented not only as participants but as co-designers. Feedback from markets, housing estates, and schools directly shapes how distribution, verification, and engagement are implemented. By making everyday participation visible and valued, ClearBag Lagos ensures that climate action reflects the lived realities and leadership of those most affected.
