How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Freshpack's primary beneficiaries are low-income women vendors in East and West Africa, a group highly vulnerable to climate shocks (volatile supply chains, food price spikes) and underrepresented in climate solutions. Our project empowers them by: Economic Resilience: By reducing produce spoilage by up to 50% with the 10-day extension, we directly increase their daily profits by 30%−50%. This financial stability acts as a critical buffer against climate-related income volatility. Voice and Agency: We turn them into active participants in climate mitigation by making them the direct deployers of a zero-carbon cooling solution that avoids potent methane emissions. Representation in Our Organization Representation starts at the top: Leadership: Our CEO, Editha Mshiu, and our CMO, Shaina Mlunga, are both women of color and regional experts. Abasi Awazi (CPO) is also a regional expert. This ensures that the lived experience of the communities we serve is embedded in every strategic decision. Team: Over 70% of our staff and field agents are local women and youth from the communities we operate in (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda). This guarantees cultural relevance, effective implementation, and authentic community trust.
