Project Summary / Description:
Prospect is an open-source data platform that automatically collects, harmonizes, and displays data from any modern sustainable energy solution—solar home systems, mini-grids, clean cookstoves, and productive use equipment. Think of it as a central nervous system for energy access programmes and associated financing schemes, such as result based finance subsidy programmes. The platform works by connecting to smart meters, mobile payment systems, and IoT devices to track real-time performance of energy systems. It automatically validates data accuracy, creates customized dashboards, and enables instant verification of programme results. Crucially, it's completely free and open-source, democratizing access to sophisticated data tools previously available only to large, well-funded organizations. This matters because reliable data transforms how clean energy programmes operate. In Uganda for example, Prospect helped the government achieve its electrification targets three times faster by providing real-time information to adjust strategies during implementation. Data – that we provide open source – accelerates carbon mitigation. This is our contribution. Subsidy programmes using Prospect process claims automatically, reducing transaction costs and accelerating payments to energy companies—letting them focus on installation rather than paperwork. By making verified impact data accessible to investors and governments, Prospect builds confidence in clean energy programmes, unlocking more funding and faster deployment of climate solutions.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The A2EI team and consultant roster are gender balanced, both in technical and in non-technical positions. In addition, Prospect promotes equity and inclusion by: Creating new jobs in IT and data management in the countries where Prospect is used: as Prospect is open source, any company can offer to build Prospect customisations for clients. In Malawi, A2EI works closely with a local company to customise the platform for government use, strengthening its capacity in the process. Allowing for better tracking and targeting of energy access expansion to hard-to-reach groups: Many results-based financing programmes in the energy access space offer higher incentives for sales to hard-to-reach groups, such as women-headed households and remote rural communities. Until now, these incentives had to be set based on rough estimates of these customers’ willingness and ability to pay. Prospect offers real-time, detailed analytics on large energy access portfolios, and thereby allows for much better targeting of subsidies and sales strategies. This is expected to accelerate the electrification of communities and groups that have historically been left behind.

Mission Statement:
Prospect aims to accelerate the expansion of high-quality, sustainable energy access solutions by providing state-of-the-art data collection, aggregation and analysis capabilities for free to all stakeholders in the ecosystem. With better data and analysis, these stakeholders can #StopGuessing and unlock better policies, strategies, incentive structures, investment decisions, and business plans.
