Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Synnefa’s project empowers climate-vulnerable and underrepresented groups, particularly smallholder farmers, women, and rural agro-processing communities, who are often excluded from access to clean energy, modern infrastructure, and climate finance. Many of the agro-processing enterprises and cooperatives targeted by this project source produce from women and youth farmers, for whom post-harvest losses directly reduce income and resilience. By replacing fuel-based drying with affordable, solar-powered drying systems delivered through a rent-to-own model, the project lowers barriers to adoption and enables enterprises to transition to clean energy without prohibitive upfront costs. This approach reduces exposure to harmful working conditions, lowers operating expenses, and improves income stability for enterprises and the smallholder farmers they serve. Synnefa’s leadership and field teams include women and young professionals in technical, operational, and management roles, including hardware production, field operations, and partner engagement.

Mission Statement:
Smallholder farming sits at the intersection of climate risk, markets, infrastructure, finance, knowledge, and trust. Improving one part of this system in isolation rarely leads to lasting change. Synnefa exists to improve incomes for smallholder farmers at scale by addressing these challenges holistically.
