How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The AI- and EO-Powered Carbon Sink Planters Program is designed to empower groups traditionally underrepresented in climate action, including women, youth, and smallholder farmers in climate-vulnerable areas of Kenya. Recognizing that women manage over 60% of agricultural activities in rural households yet often lack access to climate-resilient technologies, the program prioritizes their inclusion in training, deployment, and decision-making processes. Youth are actively engaged as local climate ambassadors, supporting planter installation, data collection, and community education. The initiative also targets marginalized communities in dryland regions, where land degradation and water scarcity disproportionately affect livelihoods. Within Soil Doctors, women and youth are represented in leadership and operational roles: women serve as project coordinators and community facilitators, while youth lead field monitoring and AI-driven analytics. By providing skills, income opportunities, and climate-smart tools, the program strengthens agency among these groups, enabling them to implement sustainable land management practices, increase tree survival from below 30% to over 85%, and generate measurable carbon sequestration. Through this inclusive approach, the program ensures that climate solutions are co-created and benefit those most affected by environmental degradation and climate change.
