Project Summary / Description:

The initiative establishes School-Led Water Source Protection Clubs in Mbeya District to protect critical water sources and catchments. Students and teachers are trained in climate change, water source protection, catchment conservation, and environmental hygiene, conducting catchment cleaning, tree planting, and community awareness activities. The project currently engages 2,000+ students and 30 teachers and is expanding to 10+ new schools in 2026.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Sustainable Water Tanzania’s initiative actively empowers youth and women, who are often underrepresented in climate action decision-making. By forming Water Source Protection Clubs in schools, students, especially young girls, take leadership roles in catchment protection, tree planting, and community awareness campaigns, gaining skills, confidence, and agency to influence environmental stewardship at home and in their communities.
Teachers, including female educators, serve as mentors and role models, ensuring inclusive participation and leadership development. The initiative also engages climate-vulnerable communities relying on local water sources, ensuring that the voices and needs of the most affected populations inform project activities.
Within SWT’s organizational structure, women hold key leadership positions, including Adventina Wigenge as Managing Director, providing strategic oversight and planning. Youth perspectives are incorporated through student club leadership and volunteer involvement, ensuring that the project reflects the priorities and capacities of those most impacted by climate change.
By embedding inclusion at both operational and governance levels, the project strengthens social equity, enhances community engagement, and ensures that climate solutions are informed by and benefit underrepresented groups, creating a sustainable model of youth and gender-inclusive climate action in Tanzania.
