Project Summary / Description:
Intergenerational Climate Action for Carbon-Smart Savannah Communities (ICAC-SC) is YACC-Ghana’s flagship climate mitigation and rural resilience program operating in northern Ghana’s savannah zone. The initiative integrates indigenous ecological knowledge, youth leadership, and agroecological carbon farming practices to restore degraded farmlands, increase soil and tree-based carbon sequestration, prevent bush burning, and reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions while improving food security and rural livelihoods.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ICAC-SC is intentionally designed to center rural youth, women, and climate-vulnerable farming communities who are traditionally excluded from climate finance, policy processes, and technical training. The program connects indigenous elders and smallholder farmers with youth climate stewards to revive locally proven climate adaptation and mitigation practices while building new leadership pathways for young people. Women farmers participate in agroforestry, nursery management, and soil restoration activities, gaining access to climate-smart livelihood opportunities and decision-making spaces. Youth under 30 serve as community climate stewards, data collectors, and trainers, strengthening local ownership and long-term sustainability. YACC Ghana itself is youth-led and rural-rooted, ensuring that underrepresented communities are not only beneficiaries but also designers and implementers of climate solutions.
