Project Summary / Description:
De30 is an advanced, low-carbon bio-petrol initiative developed by Carbon Neutral Initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from road transport using existing vehicles and fuel infrastructure. The project converts renewable ethanol into higher-energy alcohol blends that integrate into standard refinery blending systems, allowing immediate deployment without new engines, fueling assets, or supply chains. By displacing a portion of fossil-derived petrol, De30 reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions per liter while maintaining fuel performance and reliability for private vehicles, commercial fleets, and public transport. Its drop-in design lowers adoption costs and minimizes disruption, making it particularly suitable for emerging and fuel-import-dependent economies. De30 supports a just energy transition by reducing fuel emissions and import dependence while preserving affordability, local jobs, and energy access as transport systems decarbonize.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
De30 is led by a young scientist from Jamaica, a Island Developing State that is highly vulnerable to climate change and fuel price volatility, yet underrepresented in global climate innovation. The initiative was shaped by the lived realities of island and developing economies, where transport emissions must be reduced without compromising affordability, livelihoods, or energy access. Carbon Neutral Initiative is youth-led and inclusive by design, with young professionals and early-career scientists playing central roles in technical development, strategy, and implementation. Women are represented in leadership and governance, including communications, partnerships, and operations, and are intentionally included in decision-making processes. At the systems level, De30 supports climate-vulnerable farming and rural communities by creating circular economy pathways that connect agriculture to clean energy. The project is designed to utilize ethanol and bio-based feedstocks derived from crops and agricultural residues, creating new, higher-value markets for farmers while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. This approach supports rural income stability, local supply chains, and skills development, particularly for youth and women. By integrating agriculture, fuel production, and transport decarbonization, De30 enables developing countries to participate directly in the clean energy transition not only as end users, but as producers and beneficiaries of climate solutions.
