Project Summary / Description:
SheFarmsGreen is a clean energy irrigation initiative that supports women smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria with comprehensive, affordable, accessible, easy to use and environmentally friendly subscription-based mobile solar water pumps. The initiative replaces diesel and petrol-powered pumps with mobile solar systems, leading to reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, lowers farming costs, enables year-round climate-resilient agriculture, improves incomes and food security for women-led farming communities.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
SheFarmsGreen was designed specifically for women smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria, one of the most climate-vulnerable and underrepresented groups in climate and agricultural decision-making. Although women contribute the majority of agricultural labor in the region, they face persistent barriers to land ownership, finance, clean energy, and modern farming technology. SheFarmsGreen addresses these gaps by providing affordable, shared solar irrigation systems through women-led farmer cooperatives, giving women direct control over productive assets. This approach reduces physical labor, eliminates fuel costs, increases farm productivity, and improves household income and food security. The project also prioritizes inclusion by supporting internally displaced women, women with disabilities, and low-income rural households through flexible payment models and community-based delivery. Beyond energy access, SheFarmsGreen promotes social empowerment by supporting girls’ education and building grassroots awareness of climate-resilient farming practices. These values are embedded internally within Energy Assured Nigeria Limited. Women hold key leadership roles across management and operations, and women make up 50% of the Board of Advisors. The organization has adopted a gender policy requiring that at least 50% of project beneficiaries be women, with specific inclusion targets of 10% internally displaced persons and 10% persons with disabilities.
