The Southern Albania Nature-based Carbon Sinks Initiative is a field-based climate mitigation project that restores and manages traditional beekeeping and pastoral landscapes to increase long-term carbon sequestration. The initiative focuses on improving soil organic carbon, enhancing vegetation biomass, and preventing land degradation through community-led, nature-based solutions. By integrating traditional land-use practices with climate monitoring, the initiative delivers measurable greenhouse gas mitigation while strengthening ecosystem resilience and rural livelihoods.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The project empowers underrepresented groups by working directly with rural pastoral and beekeeping communities that are often excluded from formal climate initiatives. These communities are among the most climate-vulnerable in southern Albania, facing land degradation, depopulation, and limited access to resources.

Women and young people are actively engaged through beekeeping activities, field monitoring, and community-based stewardship, where they play a key role in maintaining pollinator habitats and sustainable land management practices. University students participate through applied fieldwork, training, and data collection, strengthening youth leadership in climate action.

Representation is embedded through participatory implementation, local decision-making, and collaboration with regional agricultural institutions, ensuring that local knowledge and priorities shape project activities. By linking climate mitigation with livelihoods and education, the project promotes inclusive participation while strengthening long-term community ownership of nature-based solutions.
