How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ShopOkoa centers communities that have been historically ignored by traditional and climate-linked insurance systems. Our primary beneficiaries are smallholder farmers and pastoralists in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), where over 10 million people face recurring climate shocks without access to conventional insurance or financial services. These regions are home to predominantly Black and Indigenous communities from Turkana, Samburu, Maasai, and Somali ethnic groups whose pastoral livelihoods are increasingly threatened by drought and climate volatility. Women make up 64% of ShopOkoa users, compared to just 30% in traditional insurance markets. Our model removes male intermediaries who typically control household finances, delivering payouts directly to women’s mobile wallets. This design shift has transformed agency: 87% of women beneficiaries report increased decision-making power over livestock management and children’s education following payouts. Our leadership and workforce reflect the communities we serve. Founder Kelvin Mulama is from Turkana and brings lived experience of climate vulnerability. Sixty percent of our field team comes from ASAL regions, while women represent 40% of our technical staff, including AI and blockchain engineers. Operations are led by COO Purity Christine Ouma, who has built a trusted network of 1,500 partner shops across eight counties through deep community relationships.
