Year Project Originated:
Project Summary / Description:
This initiative scales our proven model (currently operating 8 collection points processing 192 tons of e-waste annually, preventing 1,000 tons CO2e) by establishing 5 new community-embedded hubs in major Kenyan towns. In a nation generating over 53,000 tons of e-waste yearly where 95% is unsafely burned or dumped (releasing methane, dioxins, and GHGs), this project delivers GHG reductions through accessible behavioral infrastructure for communities.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Informal waste pickers (primarily youth from low-income areas):They are trained in safe ewaste handling with fair M-Pesa pay (20% above market) for the value of collected waste, transitioning hazardous work to certified "Climate Collectors." Women and Youth (unemployed in target towns): Trained in refurbishing/disassembly, receiving micro-loans to launch collection ventures/refurb shops, building green entrepreneurship. Women: Prioritized in ambassador programs and school outreach, addressing gendered poverty in e-waste informal sector. Climate-vulnerable rural communities (e.g., Maasai in Kajiado): Hubs provide accessible disposal, preventing toxic pollution.
