Project Summary / Description:

The installation of the rooftop will significantly enhance both social and environmental outcomes for the plant. By providing safer and more dignified working conditions especially for women workers it ensures that the workforce can carry out waste segregation and composting in a secure and supportive environment. With the new rooftop, waste collection can expand from 700 households to 1,500, as workers will have the necessary protection to efficiently sort and process materials, amplifying the plant’s positive impact on the community and the environment.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The IRRC in Mustafabad is designed to place rural climate-vulnerable households at the center of climate action. These communities, often living near unmanaged waste sites and exposed to health and environmental risks, benefit directly from the IRRC’s operations. By diverting waste from landfills, the facility reduces local air and water pollution, lowering respiratory and sanitation-related health burdens. Compost produced at the IRRC will be distributed to smallholder farmers, enhancing soil fertility, improving crop yields, and strengthening resilience against climate stress such as droughts and floods.
The project also creates dignified livelihoods for residents who previously relied on informal, unsafe waste work. By formalizing roles with fair wages, protective equipment, and training, the IRRC transforms vulnerable households into active participants in climate solutions. Community committees ensure that these groups are represented in governance, shaping priorities and decisions that directly affect their wellbeing.
