Project Summary / Description:

Kigali Green Gallery is an art-based climate education and behaviour-change initiative founded in 2022 to reduce agricultural emissions in Rwanda. The project uses  art, visual storytelling, and documentary film to translate complex climate science into practical, locally relevant knowledge. Youth creatives under 25 are paired with community elders to merge scientific insights with traditional ecological knowledge, ensuring credibility and cultural resonance.

Kigali Green Gallery targets climate-vulnerable, predominantly agrarian communities, with a strong focus on women farmers and rural cooperatives. Artworks and films are brought directly to villages through community exhibitions facilitated alongside local administrations, creating dialogue that leads to collective, actionable climate pledges.

To date, the project has produced 100 climate-education paintings and six documentary films, reaching 15,500 farmers across Rwanda. These engagements have resulted in 125 community climate pledges that are already implemented, contributing to an estimated 1,500 tCO₂e in cumulative emissions reductions since 2022.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Women constitute 79% of Rwanda’s smallholder farmers, yet have limited access to climate knowledge. Through our community exhibitions and climate-pledge activities, women farmers gain practical skills in composting, agroforestry, and low-emission practices. Of the 15500 farmers who benefited from our project, 11401 are women. We prioritize climate-vulnerable rural communities, where 70% of Rwandans depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. 

Youth, who make up the majority of Rwanda’s population, play a central role in our model. We recruit creatives under 25 and pair them with elders to co-create artworks and films that translate climate knowledge into accessible storytelling. This positions youth as climate educators and innovators, not just beneficiaries. Our leadership team includes women, youth creatives, climate experts, and elders, ensuring inclusive representation in all project decisions.
