Project Summary / Description:

Green Rwanda Initiative (GRI) is a community-based, non-profit organization in Rwanda dedicated to restoring degraded ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience, and improving sustainable livelihoods. GRI works with rural communities especially women and youth to implement tree planting, agroforestry, land restoration, and environmental education that deliver measurable climate mitigation and long-term social impact.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Green Rwanda Initiative (GRI) is rooted in rural, climate-vulnerable communities that are often underrepresented in global climate solutions. Our project intentionally empowers women and youth by placing them at the center of decision-making, nursery management, tree planting, and long-term land stewardship. Women and young people lead community nurseries, receive skills training in agroforestry and climate-smart land management, and earn income through seedling production and restoration activities.

GRI works directly with smallholder farmers who face the greatest climate risks, including soil degradation, food insecurity, and climate-induced livelihood loss. By restoring land on farms and communal areas, the project strengthens resilience while creating local employment and leadership opportunities.

Representation is reflected within our organization: GRI’s leadership, staff, and volunteers are predominantly Rwandan and come from the same rural communities we serve. Youth play active roles in field coordination and community engagement, while women are represented in both operational and leadership positions. This community-led model ensures that climate action is locally grounded, socially equitable, and responsive to the needs of those most affected by climate change.
