Project Summary / Description:
Faith and Hope Association's "Turning Waste into Wealth" initiative directly mitigates methane emissions from two major sources: organic waste dumped in landfills and agricultural crop residues burned in fields. Through three integrated components – community composting hubs, farmer-led biochar production, and behavior change campaigns – we divert 500 tonnes of organic waste from landfills (reducing methane by 600 tonnes CO₂e), train 500 farmers to convert crop residues into 50 tonnes of biochar (reducing methane by 300 tonnes CO₂e), and create 25 green jobs for women and youth. The initiative demonstrates that community-led methane mitigation can be a driver of economic opportunity, gender empowerment, and climate action.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project empowers women (60% of 25 green jobs, 60% of 500 farmers trained, women-led composting enterprises, 450 VSLA members), youth (40% of jobs, school clubs, youth ambassadors), and climate-vulnerable communities (direct beneficiaries in Mozambique's most vulnerable region). Low-income households receive free training and affordable compost/biochar. Within our organization, 67% of staff are women (all leadership roles held by women), Board is 40% women, and volunteers are 70% women. All staff and volunteers come from target communities – we are not just serving underrepresented groups; we are them.
