Project Summary / Description:

She Leads WECON-WASH is a women-led climate and public health initiative in Jos North, Nigeria that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by replacing sachet water consumption and fuel intensive water boiling with locally distributed ceramic water filters. By enabling households to safely treat drinking water at the point of use, the project cuts plastic waste, eliminates emissions from boiling and sachet disposal, and builds long-term behavior change through women-led household training, hygiene education, and follow-up support.

Women are trained as “Water Stewards,” responsible for demonstrations, household engagement, and follow-up support, reflecting their central role as providers, users, and managers of household water. The project serves low-income urban and peri-urban households in Jos North, where water insecurity, plastic pollution, and climate vulnerability intersect. Youth leadership is embedded through founder leadership and community mobilization. The project elevates voices often excluded from climate solution design and implementation.

To deliver affordable household water solutions that improve safe water access, strengthen sanitation and hygiene practices, reduce CO2 emissions and empower women to lead sustainable water management in underserved communities.
