AgriPeace Idjwi is a comprehensive, transformative initiative designed to address the intertwined challenges of climate change, poverty, and conflict in rural, off-grid communities of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It targets households living on less than USD 1 per day, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and organizational structures necessary to achieve food self-sufficiency, strengthen environmental resilience, and foster social cohesion in fragile, conflict-affected areas.
The initiative integrates climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, and ecosystem restoration with community-driven peacebuilding and economic empowerment programs. Using the PFUMVUDZA conservation agriculture methods, farmers rehabilitate degraded soils, increase crop productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and adopt sustainable, low-emission farming techniques that directly contribute to greenhouse gas mitigation. Agroforestry practices, combined with reforestation and soil restoration, enhance biodiversity, improve water retention, and build resilience against climate variability.
AgriPeace Idjwi also prioritizes capacity building and local ownership. Farmers and community members participate in hands-on training, cooperative development, and participatory decision-making structures that strengthen collective action and enable replication of the model beyond initial pilot sites. Youth and women are specifically engaged as agents of change, ensuring that leadership and economic opportunities are equitably distributed and that the community has the human capital to sustain progress over time.
The initiative demonstrates clear, measurable outcomes, including improved soil fertility, higher and more stable crop yields, reduced deforestation, strengthened social cohesion, and enhanced economic stability.
