Project Summary / Description:
This initiative deploys off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems to replace diesel-powered energy in remote and underserved communities where grid outages disrupt electricity, water, and communications. The systems enable electric water pumping, solar-powered reverse osmosis drinking water production, and reliable satellite connectivity (Starlink). By eliminating fossil fuel power generation, the project directly avoids Zone 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, reduces fuel logistics emissions, and improves the stability of vital services under the pressures of climate change. This integrated energy, water, and digital technology model provides access to clean energy in remote areas, improves system efficiency, and offers a replicable pathway to low-carbon infrastructure, aligning with the Keeling Curve Prize's decarbonization priorities.

This project aims to empower communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly those living in remote areas often cut off from electricity, clean water, and communications during disasters. By providing clean, off-grid energy for essential services, the project directly improves the health, safety, and resilience of traditionally marginalized groups in the face of formal climate challenges. At the organizational level, the project is implemented by a team from the DRRC Universitas Indonesia, comprised largely of female academics and students, reflecting the leading role of women in developing effective climate solutions. At the field level, the project actively engages women, men, and youth from the local community in needs assessment, system installation, operation, and maintenance. This approach not only ensures knowledge transfer and local capacity building but also provides opportunities for youth and marginalized groups to participate in decision-making. In doing so, the project fosters community ownership, promotes inclusivity, and develops equitable, sustainable, and needs-based climate solutions.
