Project Summary / Description:

Project: The Iroko Restoration Project (“Iroko”) is a reforestation project in Cameroon that will restore 14,000 ha of degraded forest in the Congo Basin rainforest – the “Green Lungs” of Africa.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The Project is designed to shift value and to climate-vulnerable rural communities, in particular women, youth, and Indigenous people, through three benefit streams. Furthermore, the two long-term revenue streams (carbon and cacao) are structurally contingent on conserving the planted area, thereby aligning incentives around protection.

1) Implementation income (immediate): as planting and maintenance begin, we prioritize local hiring, including youth employment; for equal qualifications we will preferentially hire women for field teams, and we target ≥1/3 of management/supervisory roles held by women. Overall, 48% of the implementation budget in the first years will directly benefit these groups.

2) Carbon profit-share (starts 5 years post-planting): a defined share of net carbon profits is ring-fenced locally, including 25% to women’s associations and 25% to affected villages (including two villages which are majority indigenous people), embedding women as direct beneficiaries rather than indirect recipients.

3) Cacao agroforestry revenues (starts 5 years post-planting, average of USD3mln per year for communities): 50% of cacao revenues flow to farmers, and we will structure the cooperative so 1/3 of cooperative management is women, with deliberate inclusion targets for women farmers as key beneficiaries.

These commitments are developed during the one-year FPIC process.
