Project Summary / Description:

This initiative focuses on reducing water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from traditional Adire textile dyeing in Nigeria. Afrikstabel designed and operates a small-scale wastewater treatment system that captures, treats, and reuses dye wastewater instead of releasing it into the environment. The system improves water quality, protects soil and public health, and reduces methane emissions from untreated organic waste. The initiative also supports women artisans by making Adire production cleaner, safer, and more sustainable, while preserving cultural heritage and creating a scalable model for community-based textile production.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Our project empowers groups who are often excluded from climate solutions in Nigeria—especially women, youth, and low-income craft communities. Most Adire and batik dyeing is done by women, yet they face the highest exposure to polluted water, unsafe workspaces, and environmental damage. By bringing wastewater treatment directly into these communities, we protect their health, preserve their income, and make their work more sustainable.

We also train women and youth to operate and maintain the system themselves. This builds technical skills, creates green jobs, and keeps ownership within the community rather than relying on outside experts. In the future, these trained operators will support new communities, turning local artisans into climate leaders.

Inside Afrikstabel, women lead the project, youth support technical monitoring, and our artisan partners are majority women. Our model shows that climate action can grow from culture, craft, and community—not just from large industries. We give underrepresented groups real participation and visible leadership in climate solutions.
