Name of Project:
Year Project Originated:
Project Summary / Description:
Planting of optimized intercropping design in ~40 plots of coconut moncultures.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project empowers climate-vulnerable and underrepresented communities by directly engaging coconut growers in Sri Lanka, a lower-middle-income country where livelihoods are highly dependent on agriculture and increasingly exposed to climate impacts. The Global South - and rural workers in particular - remain underrepresented in the climate movement, despite facing disproportionate risks. The project meaningfully involves rural laborers, harvesters, and estate managers whose incomes and working conditions are threatened by climate variability and water stress. By diversifying coconut monocultures into regenerative organic intercropping systems, the project strengthens climate resilience, improves soil and water conditions, and stabilizes farm incomes, delivering tangible adaptation and livelihood benefits to climate-vulnerable communities. Women and youth are central to the project, and the organization at large, with women making up a significant proportion of the coconut estate labor force, despite facing declining workforce participation nationally. Through hands-on training, knowledge sharing, and long-term market access via Serendipol’s organic supply chain, the project enhances skills, income opportunities, and participation in climate-positive agriculture. Youth engagement is supported through regular training programs in collaboration with government agricultural institutions, empowering young people to lead the adoption of regenerative practices and shape a more sustainable agricultural future.
