Project Summary / Description:

This is an active municipal-scale initiative in Abbottabad converting organic waste into certified organic fertilizer through composting and vermicomposting. The project reduces landfill methane emissions, replaces synthetic fertilizers, enhances soil carbon sequestration, and demonstrates a scalable circular-economy model for climate-smart agriculture.

Our project actively empowers underrepresented and climate-vulnerable groups in Abbottabad by creating opportunities for participation, skill development, and leadership in sustainable waste management and agriculture. Women, youth, and low-income communities are directly involved in organic waste collection, composting operations, and distribution of organic fertilizers, providing them with income-generating opportunities and hands-on technical training. We prioritize hiring local women and youth in operational and administrative roles, promoting gender equality and youth engagement in environmental action.

Through community workshops and training programs, smallholder farmers—including women-led farms—learn how to use organic fertilizers to improve soil health and crop productivity, enabling sustainable livelihoods and resilience to climate impacts. Our outreach campaigns target neighborhoods with limited access to waste management services, ensuring participation from marginalized and climate-vulnerable populations.

Within our organization, women hold key coordination and supervision roles, while youth lead education and outreach initiatives, ensuring decision-making is inclusive and representative. By integrating these groups into all aspects of the project, we amplify their voice in climate solutions, foster local ownership, and demonstrate a replicable model of an equitable, inclusive, and socially impactful urban waste-to-resource system.
