Project Summary / Description:

A hands-on forest care initiative within Chapultepec Forest focused on keeping mature trees healthy and standing for as long as possible. Through soil improvement, selective removal of dead or irreversibly damaged trees, targeted replanting, and ongoing monitoring, the project prevents premature tree loss, strengthens long-term forest stewardship across the Bosque, and helps maintain a stable, long-term carbon sink.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The El Sope initiative supports inclusive access to climate benefits by protecting and improving a public urban forest that is freely accessible to a diverse cross-section of Mexico City residents. Chapultepec Forest is used daily by women, youth, older adults, and communities with limited access to private green space. Maintaining healthy, safe tree cover helps ensure these groups continue to benefit from the forest’s environmental, climate, and health functions. Active management and security measures help keep El Sope a safe place to walk, run, exercise, and play.

A growing body of evidence shows that regular movement in nature helps reduce stress and climate-related anxiety (i.e. eco-anxiety). By safeguarding a heavily used recreational corridor within mature forest, the project enables daily, shaded, low-barrier opportunities for physical activity and time in nature for thousands of users, supporting mental well-being alongside climate mitigation.

While the project is not designed as a targeted social program, it is implemented in coordination with public authorities and civil society partners to encourage responsible and inclusive use of shared public space. Public engagement activities, signage, and volunteer involvement raise awareness about tree health and foster stewardship among users of all ages and backgrounds.
