Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The project is intentionally designed to empower groups that are historically underrepresented in the climate movement, particularly women, youth, climate-vulnerable rural communities, and survivors of conflict and displacement in Sinjar. These groups are not only beneficiaries but active participants and leaders in implementation.

Women and youth are prioritized through paid roles in tree propagation, planting, monitoring, and community stewardship, as well as through targeted training in climate-resilient agriculture and orchard management. This creates income opportunities while building technical skills and leadership capacity. Youth engagement supports long-term environmental stewardship and strengthens intergenerational knowledge transfer.

The project is implemented in highly climate-vulnerable, post-genocide communities, including indigenous minority groups like Yazidi, Shabak, Assyrians and Christian populations, ensuring inclusive participation across ethnic and religious lines. Community members are involved in planning, decision-making, and monitoring, fostering ownership and accountability.

Within the House of Coexistence, women and youth are represented across program, community engagement, and operational roles, and inclusion principles guide recruitment, training, and partnership approaches. By embedding equity and participation into climate action, the project ensures that those most affected by climate change are central to designing and sustaining the solution.

Mission Statement:

The mission of House of Coexistence is facilitating sustainable peace and recovery in post-conflict and post-genocide contexts by applying a peace-ecosystem approach that advances environmental restoration, climate-sensitive development, and community empowerment. Through this initiative, HOC aims to plant one million trees over ten years as a scalable nature-based climate solution.
