Project Summary / Description:
Purpose: A North Atlantic where whales thrive, ecosystems recover, and industry becomes a partner in restoring the ocean. This innovative Fund integrates shipping, energy, blue carbon, and whale-safe governance, since nature-based protection will not scale without direct integration of traditional industries. Protecting the Whale matters, since there are two distinct carbon pathways linked to whales: @Direct carbon sequestration (biomass carbon) • Carbon stored in a whale’s body as it grows, is a temporary biological carbon storage. • Carbon is permanently sequestered only when the whale dies and sinks (“whale fall”). @ Indirect sequestration (whale pump & ecosystem fertilization)
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
These groups will be represented in the Initiative. Since Indigenous People have a long-standing tradition of guardianship over the natural world, it is natural to appoint them as representatives of Whales, when legal personhood for Whales is incorporated in countries law. In the growing movement for Rights of Nature, guardianship not only gives a formal voice to Nature but also embeds care, reciprocity, and relational and cultural values in decision-making processes. Guardianship on behalf of Nature has been found to facilitate reciprocal and non-commodity understandings of Nature. Since the Fund as well is intended to sell or invest in blue carbon credits, non-carbon co-benefits are of utmost importantance as they can provide additional value to investors in the Fund. The types of co-benefits are defined as: • Social benefits or specific communities such as employment of local labour, or empowerment of under-represented groups • Economics benefits such as income streams for indigenous populations • Environmental or sustainability outcomes beyond emissions reductions, such as restoration of native vegetation and biodiversity • Equity and Cultural benefits for specific communities, such as practice of traditional farming practices These co-benefits/ES are pathways to build sustainable economies.
