Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

As already mentioned, most carbon certifiers on the market are overly expensive for farmers, land stewards, Indigenous communities, youth-led initiatives, and innovators outside mainstream institutions. ONCRA directly addresses this barrier by offering an open, transparent, and low-cost carbon accounting framework that allows these nature-based actors to access climate finance. Using publicly available methodologies rather than costly proprietary systems, ONCRA enables these underrepresented groups to quantify and certify their carbon removal and receive fair compensation. Some ONCRA-certified projects operate on less than one acre—removers who could not participate in any other certification system due to cost.

ONCRA also expands opportunities in climate-vulnerable regions. Our upcoming biochar protocol supports emerging biochar initiatives in Africa, such as „Bamboo Masse” in Benin , where biochar enhances soil fertility. Another good example is a bamboo project in Uganda that has been certified through the ONCRA framework. ”Bamboo Village” works directly with local communities to establish and maintain bamboo plantations by hand, generating social and economic benefits while protecting soil health.

Moreover, ONCRA’s principles prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion, integrating local knowledge and supporting smallholders and rural communities. Within Climate Cleanup Foundation, ONCRA is developed by a diverse, mission-driven team representing multiple backgrounds, disciplines, and nationalities.
