How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Over 3,200 of our users are women entrepreneurs (market vendors, frozen food sellers, drinks and beverages businesses) running informal sector enterprises across Africa. These women contribute almost nothing to global emissions but suffer most from climate impacts: unreliable electricity, food spoilage, and no access to clean energy financing. Our solar refrigeration and pay-as-you-go model provide them with affordable clean technology they can own through $2 weekly payments, which banks will not offer. In Nigeria and Kenya, over 60% of our PAYG customers are women. We design our sales approach around their needs: flexible payment schedules matching irregular income, simplified contracts for those with limited literacy, and door-to-door service eliminating transportation barriers. Youth are central to our scaling strategy. Our field teams (the technicians installing units and collecting payments) are predominantly young people (ages 20-40) from the communities we serve. We train them in solar technology, providing green jobs and technical skills in regions with over 40% youth unemployment. Internally, women hold over 50% of management positions, including our COO, Deborah Gaƫl. Our primary climate justice impact comes from the 12,000+ entrepreneurs (predominantly women, people of color, and low-income communities) now running their businesses on solar power instead of diesel.
