Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) operates in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve and areas of influence in neighboring states, providing training and environmental education programs, valuing ecosystem services, using regenerative tools for forests and soils, promoting collective action with various sectors to mitigate the effects of climate change.
An alliance between the government of the state of Querétaro and our organization that seeks to implement a participatory conservation model strengthening local capacities and developing economic value for the scenic beauty and services of the forests, a wide range of nature-based solutions where local communities are strengthened and organized. Provides the management and continuous linkage with multiple institutional, private and social actors, always weaving from the bottom up and with the necessary permanence to forge processes.

The 4 Returns Diagnostic – Natural, Inspirational, Social, and Financial Synergy – developed in 2024 and updated in 2025, based on the methodology provided by Commonland, presents the state of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve as perceived by its inhabitants. It is used to assess the current state of the landscape and identify the main barriers to its comprehensive restoration. It connects ecology, community values, hope and a sense of purpose, business, and long-term economic sustainability.

Overall, considering the 4 Returns, with 17 domains and 59 factors analyzed, the average rating was 3, “Good.”

Once the current state of the returns was analyzed, some factors and areas for further exploration were highlighted, not as recommendations, but as a starting point for taking the next steps in a participatory environment, maintaining the collaboration of the main stakeholders: the communities of the Sierra Gorda. 

This conceptual and practical framework is a very useful tool to give continuity to the participatory conservation model, strengthening local capacities, developing an ecological, entrepreneurial citizenry, with habits to relieve pressure on the territory.
